Role and Functions
The Standards Committee was established in 2001 as part of the Modernisation of Local Government. Although part of the Council's structure, the Standards Committee is constituted so that it can operate with impartiality with regard to the conduct of Members of the Council. This is an important factor in being able to play its part in maintaining high ethical standards amongst local Councillors.
The main functions of the Standards Committee are:
-
To promote and maintain the the highest standards of conduct by elected and co-opted members of the District and Parish Councils;
-
To monitor the operation of the Codes of Conduct by reviewing any lapses of standards and making recommendations to prevent further occurences;
-
To assist members to observe the Code of Conduct;
-
To consider and determine a complaints relating to alleged breaches of the Code of Conduct by a District Councillor or a Parish Councillor within the District in accordance with regulations and statute
At its meeting held on 29 July 2009, the Standards Committee approved an Action Plan for the promotion of ethical standards in local politics in Eden District. See below for the current version of the Action Plan.
