Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) has been one of
the best weapons against crime. It has been proved effective in
both cutting and detecting crime and because of this people now
feel safer when they're out and about.
Eden District Council in association with
Cumbria Constabulary installed a three camera system in Kirkby
Stephen in 1998 a four camera system in Appleby in 2000 and
installed three new cameras and refurbished the existing ten camera
system in Penrith Town Centre and Gilwilly Industrial Estate in
March 2002. The systems are owned by the Council and operated by
Cumbria Constabulary from its headquarters at Carleton Hall Penrith
with local monitoring at the Police Stations at Appleby, Kirkby
Stephen and Hunter Lane, Penrith.
