We have just completed our first annual
review of the Council's Disability Equality Scheme.
Disability Equality Scheme is a requirement of
the Disability Discrimination Act 2005. The scheme builds on the
work the Council, together with the Eden 'Access for All' Forum,
has already started to promote disability equality.
We have been very pleased to work with disabled
people in writing the scheme and, together with the Access Forum,
the Council has already been working to ensure that commercial and
voluntary sector service providers are aware of their
responsibilities under the Disability Discrimination Act, and the
benefits of delivering accessible and inclusive services. This work
will continue along with our partner organisations.
The talent and potential of disabled people is
not always recognised or valued and the purpose of the scheme is to
enable disabled people to be full and active members of the
communities in which they live.
As the scheme develops it will encourage and
enable an environment and culture that provides access to all
aspects of Eden life.
