Penrith New Squares

Penrith New Squares is a £77 million mixed use development that will rejuvenate the Southend Road area of Penrith. The regeneration scheme is geared towards revitalising the town of Penrith and is part of the Penrith Market Town Initiative. Lowther Manelli Properties was given the go-ahead for the project which they believe will "reinstate Penrith as a major economic centre in Cumbria, creating a vibrant shopping and tourism destination that can be a catalyst for a wider generation."

The Benefits

The Penrith New Squares development will result in:

  • Approximately 950 new full and part time jobs.
  • A new 55,000 sq ft Sainsbury's supermarket.
  • 34 new individual shops, restaurants, cafes and bars.
  • 234 new apartments and houses (30% of this housing will be affordable and 20% covered by local occupancy clauses).
  • A new football stadium at Eden District Council's Frenchfield Sports Centre.
  • An upgraded Country Park at Wetheriggs with picnic areas, surfaced paths and a sustainably managed woodland.
  • A new decked car park contributing towards the 920 car parking spaces within the scheme.
  • A substantial investment in upgrading the Kemplay roundabout at the southern entrance to Penrith at the junction of the A6 and A66.
  • Four new town squares, the largest of which will be used as a major venue for markets and entertainment.

An Eden District Council spokesperson put forward his views on the development by stating that "the impact of developments such as Penrith New Squares and the Penrith Leisure Centre Extension are helping Eden District Council fulfil many of its key priorities by providing affordable housing, the creation of jobs and opportunities to bolster tourism."
