Markets are the oldest and most traditional form
of exchange and are the reason why many of our towns were
originally established. Medieval markets were the forerunner of
today's shopping centres and comprised an array of individual
markets each with their own speciality.
The District Council manages the traditional town
centre markets in Penrith and Appleby and the monthly Farmers
Market in Penrith.
Penrith Charter Market - Great Dockray
Penrith was first granted a Royal Charter to hold
a market in the town by Henry III in 1223. Today's Tuesday market
is held in Great Dockray, one of the original medieval market
sites, and continues to uphold the town's long market tradition.
Stalls offer organic fruit and vegetables and plants, as well as a
varied selection of bags, music, materials, ladies and men's
clothing and household goods.
Penrith Farmers Market - Market Square
The traditional market for farmers and local
producers was revived in 2001 and is held every 3rd Tuesday
throughout the year, in the delightful setting of Market Square.
The market offers a tempting array of fresh, local produce and
speciality foods, all in the heart of town. Special markets are
held in August and December.
New for 2008 - Penrith Saturday Market - Cornmarket
A market was also held every Saturday in the town
centre until relatively recently and the Council is keen to revive
the tradition. A new food and craft market will be held on 1st
Saturday of the month in the Cornmarket and Bandstand. Stallholders
wishing to participate, are asked to telephone the Town Hall on the
number below for further information.
Appleby Saturday Market - Boroughgate
Appleby's small, friendly market is held in
picturesque Boroughgate and stalls offer fruit and vegetables,
baking, wet fish, household linens and books; with extra
stallholders attending during the summer.
