The towns Alston, Appleby, Kirkby Stephen and Penrith submitted applications to take advantage Portas Pilot Town grant scheme offered by the Government to help bring new life to ailing High Streets.
Unfortunately none of the Eden towns were in the first twelve pilot towns, however the Local Government Minister Grant Shapps said unsuccessful applicants should not despair - the quality of the bids has been so high that he was launching a second round of the competition.
On invitation from the Government through the local MP Rory Stewart; Appleby Alston and Penrith applied for a grant of £10,000 each from this next round of funding. All were successful. Each of these towns based partnerships are now working out how to spend the money and send their plans to us for approval. It is a condition of the funding offer that the money is delivered through the us acting as 'Accountable Body'.
When the plans are known this page will be updated to provide links direct to the town based partnership web pages for further information.
