Council Tax Benefit

Do you need help to pay your Council Tax Bill?

Council Tax benefit ensures that people in receipt of Income Support / Pension Guarantee Credit will normally pay no Council Tax and that other people on low incomes will have their bills reduced. Even if you live with people on low income you might still qualify for some help. There are two ways in which you can benefit:

  • In your own right. The benefit is calculated on your income and that of any partner. Deductions are made if other people such as sons, daughters over the age of 18 live with you. Examples of the amount of income you can have and still qualify for council tax benefit are shown here.
  • On the basis of the circumstances of any second adult (but not a partner or spouse) living with you. Generally only a single liable person (that is someone without a partner or spouse) will qualify for this type of benefit which is known as 'second adult rebate'. For example if you are a single parent with children over the age of 18 on Income Support or on a low income you may be able to claim.

Many people lose benefit because they delay making a claim. Benefit is not normally backdated so do not delay, complete an application form today. You can use our on-line calculator to give you an idea of whether you will qualify.
