Notes

  1. If you are 60 or over the above "total income amount" may not apply right away due to the equalisation of state pension age.
  2. Certain types of income are disregarded when benefit is calculated. The most common types of income that are disregarded are child benefit, disability living allowance, mobility allowance, maintenance received for a child, war disablement pension, war widows pension, attendance allowance, certain types of expenses paid to employed earners and voluntary workers. (There are lots of other less well known types of income that are disregarded. Please contact the Council if you need advice.)
  3. Your net weekly income is after deducting any tax and national insurance payments and 50% of any payment to a pension scheme.
  4. If you have more than £16,000 worth of capital assets you will not be entitled to benefit. If you have more than £6,000 for every £250 or part £250 above £6,000 we have to add £1 to your weekly income. However, if you are aged 60 or over the first £10,000 is disregarded and £1 will be added for every £500 between £10,000 and £16,000.
  5. Students cannot normally get Council Tax Benefit, but if you are a pensioner or a lone parent or disabled or you receive income support or income based job seekers allowance or you are responsible for a child or under 19 on a further education course, you could be entitled to Benefit. If you are living together as husband and wife and one partner is not a student you may qualify.

Second Adult Rebate. If you have other people aged over 18 living with you who do not pay you rent you may be able to claim Second Adult Rebate. You must be the only person liable to pay council tax for your home and you must be single or have a partner who is entitled to discount. Second Adult Rebate is calculated by reference to the total gross income of all other adults in your property. Your own income (and that of your partner if you have one) is not counted.

Please note that Second Adult Rebate is an alternative benefit. You cannot receive both Council Tax Benefit and Second Adult Rebate. If you do have entitlement to both you will be awarded the one which is greater.
